4th Annual Writers on the Storm Screenplay Competition 2009 – open for submissions

August 4, 2009

Writers on the Storm Screenplay Competition 2009

We encourage submissions from any and all genres, from comedy to horror to science fiction to drama and everything in between. As in real life, we never know what’s going to happen–no particular genre has an edge. What our judges are looking for is an engaging premise, well-executed, with compelling characters, sharp dialogue and a satisfying ending. We want your best work without regard to genre or budget.

MISSION & OBJECTIVE
WRITERS ON THE STORM is Coverage, Ink’s annual writing contest. We are dedicated to finding the best and brightest new writing talent out there. Our first-ever contest in 2006 took off like a rocket, smashing expectations with 907 entries. We found ten dynamite scripts, and several of those writers got meetings and built industry awareness. Two of our top ten are being shepherded by managers as developing talent. In the past few years, we’ve only grown bigger and better, and this year we’ve teamed up with even more sponsors to present our greatest contest yet!

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Batten down the hatches – the STORM is upon us! Welcome, friends, to the fourth annual Writers on the Storm screenplay competition. It’s been a pleasure to bring this contest to you all for the past few years. I’m honored that over 1,400 of you trusted us with your material last year!

From the beginning, we set out to make WOTS stand out from the glut of contests out there. We keep our entry fee as low as possible and offer some pretty beefy prizes (how about 10 grand cash to the winner?) We hand-pick the best sponsors — companies we ourselves use (we’re all writers here, too!) and this year we’ve got, as of this writing, 18 cosponsors — including Writers Boot Camp, offering $4,500 in Creative Cash to our top 3. Quite simply, this is the most development-heavy prize package you will find anywhere!

And yep, we give every entry feedback, and yep, if you enter through Coverage, Ink, entry into the contest is free. And yep, we have over 140 companies on our list who’ve requested our top ten list. But the main thing is, it’s all about the learning. Everyone here at Coverage, Ink/Writers on the Storm — we’re here in the trenches with you. We are writers, too. We’ve learned the hard way that it takes a lot of freakin’ hard work to break in, and that working with people who know what they’re doing can be key. We are dedicated to helping you get your craft to the level it needs to be. Embrace the learning, my friends!

So please check out our PRIZES page to learn more about the great companies participating in WOTS 4, and also check out our new WINNERS page to see what’s up with winners past! And now, better get your raingear, ‘cause the STORM has hit!

May 14, 2009

THE WRITERS NETWORK – 16th Annual Screenplay & Fiction Competition

The Writers Network Screenplay & Fiction Competition is a unique program, co-sponsored by WGA Signatory Literary Agencies in Los Angeles and New York, designed to give new and talented writers across the country the chance to pursue careers in film, television and/or publishing.

Each year, up to ten winners in each category are chosen to participate by our panel of judges (this year including agents from CAA, APA, ICM, William Morris and Gersh); each receiving our assistance in securing literary representation during the course of one year!

Not one, but two of your original feature-length screenplays, half-hour teleplays or plays will be distributed to the motion picture industry’s top producers, directors and production companies (manuscripts will be sent to top publishers). Throughout the year, The Writers Network panel of credited writers will assist you with polishing both projects prior to them being submitted.

This is your chance to begin your career as a working writer.
- Max Mayer’s winning script Adam sold to Fox Searchlight at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. It is being released in theatres July 9!
- Matt Healy’s winning script Clay Pigeons debuted in theatres nationwide in 1998! The film was produced by Ridley Scott and directed by David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers). Since signing Healy with ICM, he’s finished two writing assignments (one for Richard Donner) and landed a two-picture deal with Warner Bros.
- Mike Walsh optioned two of his projects after we signed him with Ken Sherman.
- Jon Bokenkamp sold and directed his winning script, Preston Tylk, after we signed him with ICM; landed a writing assignment with director William Friedkin; and has since written for Julia Roberts, Halle Berry and Angelina Jolie (Taking Lives).
- Haven Turleygood sold his pitch to Joel Silver and landed a writing assignment with Arnold Kopelson at Fox after we signed him with Endeavor.
- Grant Jerkins’ winning manuscript, An American Crime, was adapted for the screen by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nicholas Kazan (Reversal of Fortune) and Terry Curtis Fox. It is currently in pre-production with Barbet Schroeder (Reversal of Fortune) attached to direct.
- Frank Baldwin signed with the William Morris Agency in 2007, after we gave the tenpercentary his winning script, “Untitled Frank Baldwin.” The screenwriter has since completed studio assignments for directors Martin Scorsese, Sam Raimi, Philip Noyce and he recently sold a pitch to Paramount with director Pierre Morel (Taken, District B13) attached. Director Julian Farino is set to direct his award-winning script.
