EXPLANATION OF SERVICES:

Online Feedback:
Everyone who submits a screenplay to Slamdance will receive online feedback from our Readers. The object of our Online Feedback Service is to provide you with constructive criticism about your work. The feedback includes a logline, a pitch line, genre suggestion and shows strong and weak parts of your screenplay. Online Feedback is quite basic compared to the extensive notes provided with our Online Coverage Service.

Online Coverage Service:
The object of Slamdance’s Online Coverage Service is to provide you with extensive constructive criticism about your work. The Online Coverage Service includes a complete story breakdown and then addresses “what works”, “what doesn’t work” and “how it can be improved”. These three categories are the main part of the Coverage Service and are intended to help you with revisions of your screenplay. The Coverage Service also offers the screenwriter an idea of what “the next step” could be with their screenplay and writing. This may address media, films and screenplays, production companies and agencies the writer should be aware of, as well as any words of wisdom from one of our Readers. Slamdance’s Online Coverage provides you with an insight into the mind of a Reader who reads hundreds of independent screenplays each year. Our Readers’ goal is to assist you in crafting your submission into something that can advance in competition and impress agents, managers and producers.

Online Coverage will be available within two months from the time you submit your work. A notice will be sent to the e-mail address you provided in your screenplay application form when your Coverage is available.

Please note our Online Coverage Service is available year-round. We also offer year-round, one on one screenplay consultation services. For further details please call the Slamdance office: 323-466-1786.

Fast Track Online Coverage Service:
Slamdance’s Fast Track Online Coverage is an added benefit for those that would like to receive coverage within 14 days of your screenplay submission arriving at the Slamdance office. The additional cost of this benefit is $35 on top of the $50 base coverage charge.

SCRIPT REGISTRY:

To protect your intellectual property we suggest you register your work with the Writers Guild of America, west (www.wga.org or call 323 782 4500) and the US Patent and Trademark Office.

COMPETITION SELECTION PROCESS:

Two Readers will determine whether a screenplay proceeds into the Second Round of the Competition. Over half of the screenplays submitted make it to Round Two. From here, a Top 200 will be selected as Quarterfinalists. Fifty scripts will make it to the semifinals, and ten finalists will be announced at the Writers Guild of America in September. One writer will be awarded the Grand Prize, and all finalists will receive product prize packages from our sponsors. An additional finalist will also be selected for the Upload Films Best Low Budget Feature Special Award.

Scoring Details:
Screenplays submitted to the Slamdance Screenplay Competition are scored in five categories: Character, Dialogue, Story, Structure, and Originality. We also use a “Sparky” score which gauges the Reader’s emotional response to a screenplay. Sometimes, the Sparky score helps screenplays move onto the next round of Competition. Scores, as well as Reader meetings, determine what scripts go onto the Quarter and Semifinals, and then the Finalists. Please note no screenplay scoring is shared with anyone outside of the Readers of the Competition.

Slamdance Readers:
Slamdance Readers are industry professionals and all have a combination of the following qualifications: professional coverage background, production and development background, and/or are professional writers, Slamdance alumni, playwrights and journalists. Readers’ Competition decisions are final.

2009 – 10th Annual MOONDANCE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

May 5, 2009

THE MOONDANCE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2009

POSTMARK DEADLINE: MAY 15

MISSION & OBJECTIVE
MOONDANCE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Our objective for this competition and film festival is to inspire, promote and encourage screenwriters and independent filmmakers, and the very best work in film & film scripts, stage plays, TV scripts, musical film scores, librettos, radio plays & short stories. Moondance provides a professional forum in which those creative, talented & dedicated artists can have the opportunity for their work to be viewed and accepted by the powers that be, within the international film & entertainment community.

Our work on reaching out toward filmmakers, writers and film score composers everywhere in the world is primary and ongoing. Writers and filmmakers from all six continents, and from a wide diversity of ethnic and linguistic groups are an integral part of our mission and goals. We seek to inspire and invigorate this creative potential to perceive, conceptualize, and produce their works for the benefit of the world society. We are dedicated to preserving their accumulated accomplishments and visions as expressed through the art of film, music and writings.

Moondance promises to raise awareness of the invaluable contributions of creative talents to the entertainment community. Equity in the film industry does not mean stifling some voices so that others may be heard; it does not demand the compromising of personal standards to achieve success. Equity creates new standards which accommodate and nurture differences. Equity fosters the individual voice, investing talented people with confidence in their own authority. Equity unleashes the creative potential. We see the equal treatment of all, and the equal respect for all responses they explore, as essential to their and our ultimate goals.

Independent filmmakers, writers and composers are vocal and active participants in the social forces that shape our culture. They portray people as three-dimensional, complex human beings and thus defy the demeaning and pervasive stereotypes perpetuated by the mainstream media.

We are also dedicated to promoting visibility for women in Hollywood and their impact on the film industry, and we see this as a means to disrupt and correct the misogynous, fantastical, passive, destructive and denigrating visual representation of females that has, historically, been rendered by men in media and has for so long and so plentifully pervaded our visual culture.

Moondance promotes, encourages, educates and rewards non-violent conflict resolution in the arts & film. Our much-coveted Columbine Awards are given to the filmmakers, writers and composers (of any age) who best depict alternatives to violence as a method of dealing with conflicts, whether personal, local, national or international, and/or show why violence as a solution to conflict is ultimately counter-productive and inhumane.

Moondance is dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and preservation, and we award the Calypso Award to those filmmakers, writers and composers who create meaningful, educational and entertaining works toward this goal, and inspire others to do likewise.

Our mission is to entertain, to inform, to inspire, to encourage and to educate. We believe that films and scripts can contribute to a healthier society and that films and scripts should encourage the active involvement of audiences to connect and act collectively to address social challenges.

Winning and finalist films and scripts are innovative, distinctive, compelling and engaging, relevant to varied audiences and encourage participation. We are eager to continue to be one of the most important film festivals in the world by being innovative, risk-taking, and open to new thinking, new concepts, new talent, and new ways of telling stories.

Our film programs are always well rounded, entertaining, and enlightening, highlighting diverse cultures, opinions, and stories. We welcome individual expression and are committed to presenting diverse points of view. Moondance aims to entertain, increase awareness, provide multiple viewpoints, address complex social issues, provide forums for deliberation, and strengthen ties between a large variety of international audiences.

The long-term vision of the Moondance International Film Festival is to preserve and revitalize our intangible heritage, cultivate creative diversity, develop an intercultural dialogue, and stimulate this creative resource. Our mission is to present a vibrant and growing collection of films and writings, which is an ideal means for communication across perceived boundaries of race, culture, age and gender. These works document the complexity and depth of men’s & women’s experiences that will become widely accessible within the world film industry and to the public, and will encourage and inspire others to write and to make films.

* PLEASE CHECK OUT the “Writers, Read This” or “Filmmakers, Read This” suggestions & advice on how to submit and win film industry competitions, at the Moondance E-zine: www.moondancefilmfestival.com

*************IMPORTANT NOTES:

1. LABEL YOUR FILM with your WAB tracking #, title, running time and the director’s name. Please don’t toss a blank DVD or VHS without any kind of label, in an envelope. We don’t have time to label your film for you!

2. Do not package your film with Kraft-type shredded paper or kapok filling!!! It gets all over everything when it’s opened, and the junk ruins your DVD or VHS. Bubble-wrap is best.

3. You MUST select what awards category you’re submitting for:

SPIRIT OF MOONDANCE: women
SEAHORSE: men
SANDCASTLE: male-female team
DOLPHIN: 18 years of age or younger
NEPTUNE: 75 years of age or older

WAB has a special question space for you to select what awards category you’re submitting for! Please use it!

4. Do not use paper labels on DVDS! Paper labels often cause your DVD to stick, skip, pixilate and stop.

5. Make sure all info is is on the DVD disk and/or on the plastic case or paper envelope. Info needed: TITLE OF FILM, TRT (run-time), YOUR CONTACT INFO

6. FOREIGN SUBMISSIONS: You must mark the customs declaration: “commercial sample only, no dollar value”. Moondance will not pay customs duties or fees.

7. Write a great LOGLINE or MINI-SYNOPSIS of 25 words or so on the WAB page for your film or written project. A good logline helps sell the story! Read the titles & loglines article on the Moondance e-zine “First Impressions” for how-to tips.

Thanks a million!!!

Pitch Meeting Process

Online Registration
Pitch Meeting registration will be handled on line. All people who register for The 2008 Screenwriting Expo will receive an e-mail in early November directing them to the Expo Pitch Meetings registration page. They will then be able to register for pitches if they wish.

Why Pitch? Industry Access:
Without an agent or legal representation, screenwriters almost never get the opportunity to bring their ideas to the people who can help their script evolve into a film. Don’t miss this opportunity to pitch directly to an industry executive or literary agent with the power to turn your dream into a reality.

In one room, up to 60 of Hollywood’s A-list producers, development executives, agents, and managers at a time will be looking for new material. In all, 137 companies participated in last year’s Expo. No other event will offer writers better access to the people and companies capable of setting your writing career in motion. We’ve provided the venue, all you need to do is bring your best ideas and polished pitches — this is your chance to gain representation, sell your idea and make career-changing contacts.

Who?
Top names in the industry, including studio, network and cable development executives as well as agents and managers. Each of our executives has a studio deal and/or has produced several major motion pictures, television shows or Movies-of-the-Week. Executives seeking features of all budgets, MOWS, as well as hour and half-hour television formats will be hearing pitches. Our literary agents and managers are from the top companies representing elite screenwriting talent and making deals that grace the pages of The Hollywood Reporter and Variety every day.

The Steps In The Pitching Process:

Step 1 Understand What You Are Getting Into — Here Is A Summary Of Key Steps:

  • You must register for the Expo in order to be eligible buy pitch tickets.
  • Registrants will be notified in advance by email and on this web site of the date that tickets will go on sale.
  • The day tickets go on sale, you will receive, by email only, the link to buy in the order that you registered.
  • That on-sale date is expected to be sometime between Oct. 25 and Nov. 6, 2008.
  • You must sign the release in person at the Expo to pick up your pitch tickets.
  • Arrive at the pitch location at least 15 minutes before your pitch session. Your ticket is for a particular five-minute period. If you miss your session, you forfeit the ticket price.

Step 2 Register for the Expo
If you want to give a pitch at the Golden Pitch Festival, your first step is to register for The Screenwriting Expo.

Step 3 — Wait For Your Email. Follow the online link to purchase your pitch tickets.
Golden Pitch tickets will go on sale sometime between Oct. 25 and Nov. 6, 2008. We will send to you in an advance email, and also post on the web site, a notification of the date on which pitch tickets will go on sale. On the date tickets go on sale, follow the link to view available tickets and buy tickets.

Individual tickets (to pitch for 5 minutes to one development executive/ production company) will be sold for $25. You may also purchase 5 tickets for $100 (a savings of $25). No refunds will be given for unused pitch tickets.

Step 4 At the Expo, Sign the Release And Pick Up Tickets.

Each pitch will last up to 5 minutes. At the 5-minute mark a bell will ring and you will have 10 seconds to leave the table. You need to move quickly so the writer with the next appointment can sit down and begin their pitch. If you finish your meeting with a production company before the 5 minutes are up, please leave the table as soon as possible. This will open up an opportunity for the a writer in the “Standby” line to speak to that company.

Step 5 — Follow Up
After you pitch your story or screenplay, the producer or production company may or may not request to see a copy of your script. If the producer or company does request your script, proper protocol is to mail a copy a few days after the event with a polite cover letter reminding the producer or company of your meeting and the request. If your script was not requested, it is bad form to send it. DO NOT follow up with a phone call unless asked to.

Disclaimer
The Screenwriting Expo secures agreements to appear from each producer prior to announcing the producer’s commitment to the Pitch Meetings. Unfortunately, for any number of reasons, one or more producers may be unable to appear or may not arrive at their scheduled time. The Screenwriting Expo will have back-up producers available to hear pitches in the event that any executives are unable to meet their contractual obligation. In the event that a producer does not appear, a make-up pitch will be arranged with one of our back-up producers. Make-up pitches are available in lieu of refunds. The Screenwriting Expo cannot be responsible if a producer does not meet his or her contractual obligation.
