By extreme magical realism, we mean situations that involve fantasy-like or supernatural ideas in a hyper-reality, but still grounded in realistic characters or woven seamlessly into our natural world. In other words, “Star Wars” is not magical realism. Often, magical realism plays with the idea of two realities and how they conflict with each other, or a character with multiple identities or perceptions. We are not looking for sword and sandal fantasies, alien sci-fi or horrors. MISSION & OBJECTIVE
The mission of SkyFest is to recognize, honor, and further the career of talented filmmakers and screenwriters. This is accomplished in two ways:

1- By the awarding of numerous quality trophies and certificates of excellence

2- By awarding a significant portion of the proceeds for the entire festival as cash prizes to the winners in each of the nine categories, plus a prize for Best Overall.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
SkyFest was created by Ralph Roberts, a nationally-known author for the past 33 years and now a professional filmmaker and script writer. Ralph takes his experiences with film festivals in general, what he likes and what he feels is detrimental to submitters, and puts together a festival oriented toward MAXIMIZING the odds for submitters! But, let him explain it:

Hi. Ralph here. I love film festivals. The crowds, meeting big stars and just plain old aspiring filmmakers like me. I like entering my stuff in the festivals. I’ve won a few awards but mostly lost while spending a lot of money on travel, motels, and food. All that’s great for the folk who put on these festivals (and I love them) but not the most efficient way for us guys to get what we want and need from a festival. The two most important things, iin my opinion, being a return on our huge investment of time and dough in creating video, and some recognition for that work that we can build on in furthering our careers. Both would help us keep going!

To do this, I’ve created SkyFest.

First, the name: I live up here in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina, long known as “the Land of the Sky.” I also own a book publishing imprint, Land of the Sky Books. So, it?s a good name. And let me hasten to say that we have no connection with the very nice Asheville Film Festival, other than (so far) spending a good amount of entry money for no wins. Maybe this year or, at least, I qualify for the Asheville Rejects Festival like last year, eh? (Didn’t win that one either but my film was shown a couple of years ago! And, of course, I won’t win SkyFest because anyone connected with SkyFest, including me, is ineligible to win any award this festival gives out.)

Unlike most other festivals, which spend a ton of money on the actual event, SkyFest minimizes expenses by NOT having showings or banquets or hiring big name actor guests. We may or may not have an actual physical event (depending on how many submissions we get, but all awards will be awarded! For SkyFest I, we awarded 138 awards and we have 253 for SkyFest II.

But, you don?t care about our expenses because it DOES NOT affect your prize money. Here’s how SkyFest works (i.e:. a sampling of the rules, full rules are here):

1- A full fifty-percent of all money we take in, primarily entrance fees and advertising revenues, goes into the awards fund. NO expenses or anything else is charged against this fund (and the money goes into escrow as it comes in, protected for you to WIN!).

2- ALL expenses come out of the other half of the money and, if that’s not enough) out of our pockets (and, so far, we’re four figures in the hole but that’s not your problem and never will be).

3- There are 253 awards!! Your odds of receiving an award are MUCH better for this festival than any other I know!

4- Trophies and certificates will be substantial and classy (see the SkyFest I trophies and certificates at http://skyfest.net).

5- The awards fund is shared out in this manner:

- 10% goes to Best Overall

- In each of the nine categories, the winner gets 7% of the overall award fund, second place 2%, third place 1%. 1st to 3rd place winners get trophies and the next TWENTY-FIVE finishers receive a Certificate of Excellence (remember, our goal is to give out as MANY awards as possible). In essence, there will be TWENTY-FIVE 4th place winners in each category.

6- ALL money WILL be awarded. If there is just one entry in a category, that entry wins the full 10%. (This, by the way, is in response to a pet peeve of mine about film festivals, several times I’ve had the only entry in a category and NOT been awarded the prize because of ‘not enough participation’ and this will durn well NOT happen at SkyFest! Ff you win, you WIN!)

7- In the unlikely event of no entries in a particular category, that amount of money will be divided out and added to the other categories. And also the Certificates of Excellence will be parceled out into other categories.

8- You can enter as many films as you like in as many categories as you like. You can even enter the same film in more than one category IF there is a reasonable case it fits each area (paying the standard fee for each category, of course).

The entry fee is US$35.00, regardless of length and category *(remember, all categories share equally in the award money!)*

Writers on the Storm Screenplay Competition 2009

We encourage submissions from any and all genres, from comedy to horror to science fiction to drama and everything in between. As in real life, we never know what’s going to happen–no particular genre has an edge. What our judges are looking for is an engaging premise, well-executed, with compelling characters, sharp dialogue and a satisfying ending. We want your best work without regard to genre or budget.

MISSION & OBJECTIVE
WRITERS ON THE STORM is Coverage, Ink’s annual writing contest. We are dedicated to finding the best and brightest new writing talent out there. Our first-ever contest in 2006 took off like a rocket, smashing expectations with 907 entries. We found ten dynamite scripts, and several of those writers got meetings and built industry awareness. Two of our top ten are being shepherded by managers as developing talent. In the past few years, we’ve only grown bigger and better, and this year we’ve teamed up with even more sponsors to present our greatest contest yet!

GENERAL RULES
Writers on the Storm – Rules and Regulations

1. All submissions must be submitted online or postmarked by the deadline date.
2. Submitted screenplays must be the unproduced, unoptioned, and original work of the writer(s). There must be no dispute about the ownership of submitted screenplay(s) or the writers’ right to submit screenplay(s). Adaptations of previously published material are acceptable only if the writer can provide written proof of his/her right to adapt the material into screenplay form. Adaptations of works in the public domain are admissible.
3. Screenplays by more than one writer are eligible, but only one prize will be given and it will be the writers’ responsibility to distribute the prize. If writers of a script are unable to agree on the distribution of a prize, their script will be disqualified.
4. All writers of submitted scripts must be at least 18 years of age.
5. Screenplay must be in English, submitted electronically as either a PDF, Word Word, .rtf, or Final Draft file, or for hard copies submitted by regular mail, they must be printed single or double-sided on 3-hole white paper with the pages numbered. Hard copies should be fastened with 2-3 brads and blank cardstock covers with the title, name of writer(s) and contact information on the title page. Scripts should be between 85-130 pages and no longer than 150 pages in standard spec screenplay format. Please add an additional $10 for screenplays over 125 pages. Font must be 12-point Courier, Courier New or Courier Final Draft.
6. All submissions must contain eligible screenplay(s), a signed and completed application, entry fee, and, if you want notification that we have received your materials, a self-addressed-stamped postcard. Hard copy submissions sent via USPS or a courier service (UPS, FedEx, etc.) must not require a signature upon delivery.
7. Please read and understand these Rules and Regulations. Failure to adhere to the contest guidelines may result in disqualification and forfeiture of entry fee.
8. Judging will be performed by trained readers, industry professionals and professors at UCLA and USC film schools. The finalists’ scripts will be read by Jim Cirile, the Coverage Ink team and selected industry professionals. The decisions of the judges will be final.
9. Writers on the Storm may substitute alternative prizes of equal or greater value in place of previously announced prizes.
10. Entry fees are nonrefundable. Make your check payable to Coverage, Ink.
